DO YOU WANT TO CREATE THE FUTURE? EXPAND YOUR PERSPECTIVE.
Hey there, it’s Stacey Ashley and I am at the Singapore Botanic Gardens just having a bit of a stroll and taking a bit of downtime after what’s been a really busy few days.
One of the things I haven’t done yet this week is to write my article. So I thought I’d record one instead!
Travel for me is one of the great multipliers and it’s an opportunity that has so many layers and levels.
In my book, Big Leadership, I talk about leaders needing to develop a big vision, to be really proactive about how they go about aspiring to the future and proactively creating it.
And so, I wanted to talk to that in relation to travel because I actually talk about this in my book.
Travel is an opportunity to expand our own perspectives and if we’re going to develop a big vision about the future we want to create or contribute to, then we need to give ourselves every opportunity to expand our vision. Our vision of what’s possible, our perspective on the world to get more breadth in our insight and our understanding and so for me a huge opportunity this week to do exactly that.
The opportunity to travel for me is not just about experiencing a new country but the conversations with people, the opportunity to learn what’s important to them. What’s going on in their experience.
Yes, you get to see all the great sights and eat the amazing food and that sort of thing, but really to be able to connect with people and understand their take on the world and how they see whether it’s leadership or coaching or speaking or just being a human is profoundly impactful. And I think as a leader, we have incredible responsibility to continue that expansion of ourselves, to continue that leadership learning journey and to really look for the opportunity to understand where we can make a difference in the world by understanding the whole world just a little bit better.
So my challenge for you this week or the question that I want to put to you is, what can you do to expand your perspective, to expand your leadership self by exposing yourself to new and different experiences? Whether it’s about travel or trying something for the first time, doesn’t matter what it is, but that opportunity to go beyond what you already know, I think is critically important if you really want to be aspiring to create a better future. We need to have a more comprehensive understanding of where we are right now and how we can actually create that future.
