LEADERS, WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU COULD DO TODAY?
Where is your time going?
What kind of choices are you making about where you spend your time and energy?
I am hearing consistently not only are leaders busy, but they are in back-to-back to back meetings, regardless of whether they are working in the office or working from home.
How is this serving them and their ability to make a difference?
If you are a leader and spend all your time in meetings, when do you take action that arises from these meetings?
When do you prepare for meetings?
When do you do your thinking, your strategising, your visioning?
And when do you fulfil your responsibilities as a leader, one of which is to grow more leaders?
How can you do this if you are spending most of your time in meetings?
As a guide, you need to consider spending about 30% of your time with your people. Mentoring, modelling and coaching leadership. Growing more people who are more equipped as leaders. Enabling your people to build accountability and capability, so they too become leaders who grow more leaders.
In today’s rapidly accelerating, technologically advancing world, it is more important than ever that our leaders develop human skills—the ability to connect, build trust, build relationships, collaborate, and forge communities of people who can solve problems and navigate pathways forward.
Yet if you are principally spending your time in meetings, you miss this opportunity and so lose control of your ability to not only influence the moment you are in, but also to create the future you want.
“What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”
Jane Goodall, Primatologist & Anthropologist
So again, I ask you, where is your time going?
What might you need to do differently so your time and your energy, your focus, your attention, and your unique difference are invested in the things that are going to make an impact? That means that in six or 12 months, things will change. As a minimum, you will have invested in your people so their leadership can grow.
I’d love to know your thoughts.
