LEADERSHIP IS THE CHOICES YOU MAKE. ESPECIALLY FOR YOURSELF.
This week has been enormous for me. A three-day trip to Melbourne to catch up with clients, run a breakfast event, meet with prospective clients, dinner out each night with colleagues and friends. Arriving home late on Wednesday, I then worked on prepping for an important online client delivery on Thursday.
Thursday’s event ran into the evening because the client is based in Pakistan, five hours behind Sydney time. I finished off a large client proposal about 10:00 pm Thursday night. And I still had not found time to write my regular weekly newsletter, which is published on Friday morning.
I had planned to write the newsletter during Thursday, but I simply ran out of time.
So, what to do?
In days gone by, I might have pushed myself to write that newsletter because it is a commitment I made to myself. But really, in the scheme of things, does it matter if I publish a newsletter this week or not?
Just this once?
Will it have a direct impact on anything?
Will it matter in two- or three-weeks’ time whether I have written and published this week’s newsletter or not, given that most of the time I do?
And the answer is, in the scheme of things, no, it does not matter.
So, I decided I was not going to write a newsletter. I gave myself permission to let it go this week. It was late, I was tired, and I had already done exceptional work this week.
And then I had this great idea to write a newsletter about ‘not writing a newsletter, because in the scheme of things, it didn’t really matter’. And when the ideas flow, they flow. I figured I may as well capture the idea because I was not going to sleep with this idea running around in my head.
So, I did a quick voice recording to capture this thought. Perhaps 2 mins of recording.
My reminders to myself:
1. It is okay to simply let it go, sometimes. If something is not going to make a major difference, even if you had planned to do it and you have not found the time, then let it go.
2. When the idea grabs hold and you get in flow, even if it is not the time you chose, it is OK to go with the flow. It can be quick and easy to accomplish the thing you set out to do when you are in flow.
In your day to day, it might be a little bit of lesson 1 and a little bit from lesson 2. Like me, you get to make the choice.
I’d love to know your thoughts.
