THE PRACTICE OF LEADERSHIP. BIG, BOLD, BRAVE LEADERSHIP
What intention have you set for the year?
What will you look back on and be proud of?
I truly believe that if you want to make progress, you need to have some intention and a map to help you get there. For me, I don’t want to end up in the same place as I started. Which is not to say where I am is not terrific, but I’d like things to be different and better as time passes. I think some of the most important things that can help us to make progress, to create some change or difference, is to set an intention, and to have a plan about how we are going to get there. A map, if you like.
One of the most valuable things I learned last year, from the wonderful Lynne Cazaly, was the concept that any map will do. It is not about having the perfect map. It is about having a map that allows you to begin your journey, and to set off with purpose and intention. I love this concept because, even if you do not have the perfectly right map right now, you can still make progress with intention and purpose.
I’m also a believer in striving. What I mean by this is that I set myself a goal or an objective that I intend to make progress towards. But this is not my ultimate objective. There is always a next mountain to climb, a next summit to reach. I love this because I do not ever want to get stuck in a place where I am plateauing, or that I am just so comfortable I do not want to do anything differently.
When you get into this kind of situation, I think this is when, as a leader, we can go horribly wrong. We may become complacent, we can lose currency and relevance, and we have nothing left to offer because we are not progressing, we are not learning, we are not growing. This is not leadership.
To continue to grow, progress, and develop, I also believe that we need to have very strong foundations in place upon which to build. Whether this is for ourselves, our teams, or our organisations, I believe this is true.
Part of our work at Stacey Ashley in the last 12 months has been building a strong foundation to support our expansion. It was time to move to the next level. Our initial brand served us for a long time, and I have always loved it, and what it represented in change and growth. But it was time to aspire higher, to seek to become more. So our new brand is a representation of this aspiration to be impactful at a global level. To be bold, to offer clear, simple, and strategic solutions for expanding leadership in organisations.
So, as you ponder your intentions for this year, and you create your map to move towards achievement of your intentions, here is a reminder of our intention. The expansion, of impact, of value, of reach, and the difference that we can make to elevate the practice of leadership globally. Big, bold, brave leadership.
I’d love to know your thoughts.
